Ishmael's Corner ~ Storytelling Techniques For Business Communications

“Storytelling Techniques” Aren’t Quite the Same Thing As “Storytelling”

Every once in a while I’ll get an email or comment from someone calling me out for passing myself off as a storyteller.

They’re right.

I’m not a storyteller.

My passion lies as a student of storytelling and applying the techniques that underpin storytelling in business communications.

There’s a huge difference between the two.

For example, a few weeks ago I went to one of my digital tools, Open Site Explorer (captures data on backlinks), which was down due to technical difficulties.

I loved the way the company, SEOMOZ, handled this mishap with a touch of levity.

Not quite what one expects to find when a site is down.

Conversational.

Fun with language.

Sign off with the personal name Roger.

The application of storytelling techniques can come in the form of a single vignette like the one from SEOMOZ as opposed to a classic storytelling arch.

The investigative reporting side of me wanted to know who is this chap Roger.

Here’s the Twitter exchange.

Meet Roger.
