We strive to be advocates for the PR profession.
This means making time for information interviews and other activities that guide students in finding the elusive first job.
My own hunt for that first job left a lasting impression. I couldn’t even give myself away … literally.
After the conventional path yielded rejection after rejection, I came up with idea to craft a cover letter that highlighted my willingness to work for free. I figured I could get a bartending job at night to pay the rent.
There weren’t any takers.
Not even a sniff.
Now, after being on the other side of the equation for so many years, I can see how my “clever proposition” would come across as desperation. At the time though, it felt like a sumo wrestler was squeezing the youthful exuberance out of me.
So, as much for confidence-building as guidance for those pursuing PR careers, we offer a care package of information, which includes the flow chart below.

It’s our way of encouraging students and grads pursuing PR careers to keep a sense of humor.
And it doesn’t hurt to drink a cup of joe.
P.S. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that the flow chart offers another example of visual storytelling driven by words (created by Chauncey Hill and Erin Hartwig).
Now I have a career path!
Thanks Mike. I’m here to serve.
Heyo! Just noticed “caffeine” is misspelled (see: “caffine” in the purple bubble). I think that means my destiny is in copy editing? Otherwise, great flowchart!
We appreciate the helping hand. Plan to correct the graphic over the next 48 hours.
